Fish oil is derivative of oily fish tissues and is commonly used as a dietary supplement. Fish oil consists of two type of omega-3 fatty acids such as Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). These components are essential for growth and development of the brain and can help the body to fight inflammation by reducing stress, relieves menstrual pain, and also has other health benefits.

In addition, fish oil helps to retain moisture in the dry skin, as well as properties to nourish hair follicles when applied to the head. Fish oil has been recommended as a primary source for omega-3, apart from being rich in the source it also provides nutrients, vitamin B6, and B12.

Research has found that DHA found in omega-3 reduces the risk of coronary artery disease. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), consumption of fish – particularly oily fish – twice a week, provides an average of 500 milligrams of omega-3s to protect against heart diseases.

This influences positive health benefits by reducing the risk of blood clots, lowers blood pressure, and help to reverse plaque build-up in the arteries. However, consumption of high amounts of fish oil can have certain side effects that can lead to vitamin toxicities.

However, the US National Institutes of Health warns that high consumption of omega -3 fatty acids may lead to increased or excessive bleeding and hemorrhagic stroke. It has been highly recommended that fish oil supplements need to be taken after consulting a physician, especially if other medications or vitamin supplements are being taken.

Moreover, fish oil supplements consumed along with meals or freezing the fish oil pills can help to avoid some few side effects, including nausea, rash, nosebleed, and so on. Fish that contain oil, which can be consumed in daily diets are salmon, sardines, mackerel, anchovies, white fish, and herring to name a few.
